A New World Christmas
Misa Criolla by Ariel Ramirez opens the concert. This is a folk mass based on the rhythms and traditions of Hispanic America. Tenor Timothy Sparks from the UNC Music Department joins us, along with classical guitarist Joseph Pecoraro from UNC School of the Arts. A new work, straight from the Caribbean islands, called Guadalupe Magnificat by Glenn McClure gives us our first opportunity to sing with steel drums! Glenn McClure, an adjunct professor at the Eastman School of Music, loves to mix classical and ethnic traditions in his compositions. Creekside Chorus, a children's chorus directed by Amanda Haas, joins us for 3 selections in a Calypso style. Add an array of percussion and string and wind instruments and the mix is irresistible. Vancouver Visions: Music by Stephen Chatman
Vancouver’s most distinguished composer, Stephen Chatman, joins us for the US premiere of his “Magnificat”, featuring texts in Latin plus the six official languages of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics, and “Earth Songs,” a choral-orchestral work inspired by the universal spirit and beauty of our natural world. The musical variety in this Chatman compositional showcase is sure to amaze and delight you! Music includes NC premieres of: Magnificat, Earth Songs, and It Will Not Change.
Performed with orchestra and special guests: Stephen Chatman, composer; Jennifer Chang, Chinese Zheng; Andrea Moore, soprano; Matt McClure, saxophone; and Cantari.
